Can I use an outdoor tarpaulin in the garage as well?
Yes, but with one caveat. The Sofin outdoor polyurethane sheet is designed to withstand the elements, not to maximise breathability in an enclosed space. It works perfectly well in a dry, well-ventilated garage. In environments with fluctuating humidity or poor ventilation, the lower breathability of PU compared to bi-elastic fabric may lead to condensation forming beneath the sheet.
If the motorbike is a valuable one and the garage is damp, the best option is to use a bi-elastic cover indoors and a PU cover for outdoor use.
How often should the motorbike cover be washed?
It depends on the material and how it is used. For outdoor polyurethane tarpaulins: every 2–3 months under normal conditions, or immediately after exposure to tree sap, bird droppings or sand — these substances can damage the PU coating if left to dry.
The bi-elastic cover for indoor use in a clean garage: washing it once every 4–6 months is generally sufficient. Dust can be easily brushed off before a full wash is required.
Does the motorbike cover also protect against frost and snow?
The Sofin polyurethane motorbike cover prevents water from penetrating thanks to the material’s inherent waterproof properties, but it does not provide thermal insulation: the temperature beneath the cover mirrors the outside temperature.
This means that any water that seeps in before the cover is fitted, or any condensation that forms inside, may freeze. The correct way to protect your motorbike in winter is to cover it whilst it is dry – not wet – with a waterproof, breathable cover that allows any residual moisture to evaporate slowly.
Is the polyurethane in the cover safe for the motorbike’s paintwork?
Yes. The polyurethane coating is chemically stable and does not release any corrosive substances when it comes into contact with paint, plastic or chrome-plated surfaces.
PU is, in fact, the same type of material used in many bodywork protection products in the automotive sector. The inner layer of the cover, which is in direct contact with the motorbike, is soft and non-abrasive — it is the outer layer that is treated with PU to protect against the elements.
Can I put the cover on a wet motorbike?
No — this is one of the most common mistakes. A cover placed over a wet motorbike traps moisture against the bodywork for hours or days, encouraging rust and the formation of water marks.
Before covering it, dry the motorbike with a microfibre cloth, at least on the main surfaces. If you have to cover a wet motorbike, use a highly breathable cover and uncover it as soon as possible.
